Are you struggling with weight control? Frustrated by dieting and exercise without seeing results? At TNC, we’re here to support you with Glucagon-Like-Peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, such as Ozempic, now available at our clinic. For those with diabetes, Ozempic can also help reduce insulin resistance and improve blood sugar control.

Understanding Ozempic

What is Ozempic?

Ozempic (semaglutide) is primarily used for improving blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. Recently, it has gained attention for its effectiveness in weight management, helping many achieve significant weight loss while also enhancing metabolic health.

Benefits of Ozempic

  • Weight Loss: Many patients experience substantial weight loss, leading to improved overall well-being and a reduction in obesity-related health risks.

  • Improved Blood Sugar Control: Ozempic effectively lowers blood sugar levels for those with type 2 diabetes.

  • Cardiovascular Benefits: Research indicates it may lower the risk of heart disease and related complications.

How Ozempic Works

Ozempic is administered as a subcutaneous injection, typically once a week. Following your TNC doctor’s instructions for injection techniques is crucial for optimal results.

Dosage Regimen

  • Starting Dose: 0.25 mg once a week for the first four weeks.

  • Maintenance Dose: After four weeks, the dose may be increased to 0.5 mg once a week. Your healthcare provider may adjust this to a maximum of 1 mg based on your weight loss and blood sugar control. (Note: 2 mg Ozempic pens are not currently available in Hong Kong.)

Ozempic requires proper storage at 2–5°C, meaning it cannot be purchased online. At TNC, we provide refrigerated Ozempic on-site and offer transportation cooler pouches to ensure your medication remains effective on the way home, together with a sharps disposal container for safe disposal of needles.

Initial Consultation

Before starting Ozempic, an initial consultation with your healthcare provider is essential. This will include:

  • A comprehensive review of your medical history.

  • Discussion of your weight management goals and any related health concerns.

  • Assessment of potential risk factors or contraindications, such as pregnancy or drug interactions.

Metabolic Assessment

Your healthcare provider will conduct a metabolic assessment to evaluate:

  • Blood sugar levels (fasting glucose and HbA1C) and additional tests for liver and kidney function, lipid profile, and complete blood count.

  • Body mass index (BMI) and weight status.

  • Any underlying health conditions that may affect treatment.

  • Your medication history.

This assessment helps tailor the therapy to your specific needs.

Continuity of Care

Regular follow-up appointments are vital for monitoring your progress with Ozempic. Your healthcare provider will:

  • Track your weight and blood sugar levels.

  • Monitor for any side effects.

  • Provide guidance on diet and lifestyle changes to support your weight management efforts.

Reassessment

Typically, reassessments occur every 3 to 6 months. During these visits, your healthcare provider will:

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of Ozempic for weight loss and blood sugar control.

  • Adjust dosages if necessary.

  • Discuss any concerns or experiences you may have had.

Side Effects of Ozempic

Minor Side Effects

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhoea

  • Constipation

  • Stomach pain

These side effects often diminish over time as your body adjusts to the medication.

Serious Side Effects

While serious side effects are rare, they can include:

  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)

  • Kidney problems

  • Increased risk of thyroid tumours (observed in animal studies)

Ozempic is an effective option for weight management and obesity treatment, alongside its use for type 2 diabetes.
