Dr. Donald Greig
Dr. Donald Greig, a General Surgeon, has been in Hong Kong private practice for over 25 years. Prior to his practice in Hong Kong, he had undergone his surgical training in both open and laparoscopic techniques in Edinburgh, Scotland for 10 years as a Research Fellow, senior trainee, senior lecturer and a consultant surgeon.
In 1990, he was attached to University Department of Surgery, Queen Mary Hospital Hong Kong for 1 year as a visiting lecturer.
He returned to Hong Kong, a place he now regards as home, on a permanent basis in 1998 to work as a surgical specialist in a large private practice (QHMS).
In 2002, Dr. Greig, along with several of his colleagues established Hong Kong Surgical Specialists in Jardine House, a multidisciplinary practice of surgical and anaesthetic specialists, and physiotherapists from Prohealth Sports & Spinal Physiotherapy Centres.
General Surgical Services
Prevention of Colon Cancer:
Colonoscopy diagnostic and screening program in over 40 year olds for the detection of premalignant polyps and in patients with family histories of colorectal cancer.
A colon cancer prevention program has now been running for 26 years with not a single patient developing colorectal cancer if they have remained within the program. As colorectal cancer is the most common cancer in Hong Kong and globally in the top three, I believe this is a testament to the efficacy of the program.
Prevention of Lower Oesophageal Cancer:
Gastroscopy is used for the assessment of upper gastrointestinal symptoms and screening of patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and precancerous Barrett’s oesophagus. The establishment of an endoscopic screening program to prevent lower oesophageal cancer developing in patients with Barrett’s oesophagus has been effective. To date, no patients on the 26-year program have developed oesophageal cancer.
Gastroscopy: assessment of upper gastrointestinal symptoms
Hernia surgery offering laparoscopic techniques currently available with less discomfort & earlier return to work together with open hernia surgery techniques which are used where appropriate
Comprehensive breast care: consultations within 48 hours of referral; 36 hour diagnostic service for the results of FNAs and mammograms; mammographic screening program; cancer risk assessment
Laparoscopic l Keyhole / Minimally Invasive surgery diagnostic: hernias, appendicectomy, cholecystectomy, splenectomy, adhesiolysis, small bowel resection, colectomy, reflux disease / hiatus hernia, liver biopsy
Surgical dermatology: consultation, assessment and treatment of most skin lesions including skin cancers, naevi, lumps, excessive sweating and treatment with Botox, and toenail problems.
Comprehensive vein care: tailored operations for varicose & thread veins with options which include surgery, dermal K cream and injection sclerotherapy.
Male family planning: vasectomy and reversal of vasectomy Thyroid surgery: consultation, assessment and treatment of thyroid swellings and symptoms Urology: any scrotal /testicular swelling, circumcision, investigation of blood in the urine; prostate cancer screening
Hyperhiderosis (excessive sweating): relatively common in armpits and palms, treated with Botox injections or minimally invasive surgery
Neck surgery: any neck swelling including salivary glands, lymph gland biopsy and cysts
Oral pathology: limited to excision biopsy of lesions on lips, tongue and oral cavity; frenulum release
Paediatric surgery: any common straight forward problems occurring in children such as hernias, appendicitis, skin lesions, circumcision, or scrotal swellings, except newborn circumcision or infants less than 1 year
Dr. Greig’s principal interests within the scope of general surgery cover the areas list above. He also offers care for many other aspects general surgery including the abdomen, thyroid, common childhood surgical illnesses; excessive sweating, urology, male family planning, and executive health assessments.

Shanghai Consultations
Dr. Greig has been travelling to Shanghai every one to two weeks to consult and manage patients for the past 18 years although for the Covid years, the Shanghai Clinic temporarily ceased.
Dates for future Shanghai clinics can be found with this link.
Dr. Greig works out of Global Health Care (GHC) clinic in the heart of central Shanghai in Puxi district. Its central location means ease of access to patients by means of the Shanghai Metro.
The principal purpose of running these clinics is to provide access to experienced Western trained specialists who can triage patients to determine which patients can be managed locally or those that require further treatment or investigation in Hong Kong.
As China’s substantive transport infrastructure links progress with ever increasing efficiency and connectivity, running clinics in Shanghai also provides access to specialist consultations for patients from the major surrounding cities such as Nanjing, Suzhou, Ningbo and Hangzhou.
