I hope this newsletter finds you well. If you are taking – or thinking about taking - GLP-1 medications for weight loss, such as Ozempic, Mounjaro or Wegovy, this is for you. These treatments can be genuine game-changers, helping you manage your weight and reshape your relationship with food, especially when combined with healthy habits and support. Let’s look at some common questions I hear in clinic and how to make your journey as smooth and effective as possible.
With over 1 billion people globally classified as obese, the implications for public health are profound and alarming. Obesity is not merely a cosmetic concern; it significantly elevates the risk of numerous severe health issues, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and joint disorders. These conditions not only diminish quality of life but also lead to a staggering burden on healthcare systems worldwide. In response to this growing crisis, medications like GLP-1 agonists have emerged as promising interventions, offering individuals a new pathway to effective weight management and improved health outcomes. By addressing both the physiological and psychological components of obesity, these medications can play a crucial role in reducing associated disease risks and fostering healthier lifestyles.
Finding Balance
Many of you have told me how these medications quiet the constant “food noise” - the thoughts about eating that can dominate the day. That sense of calm is wonderful, but it is also just a starting point. Working on the emotional and psychological side of eating remains just as important, which is why I’m so keen on the extra psychological support we’re building into your care.
Common Questions from Our Community
Do I need the highest dose to lose weight?
Not at all. Many people lose weight very well on lower doses, with fewer side effects. The right dose is the one that works for your body, not the biggest number on the box.
What about pausing for special events?
Celebrations are part of life, but stopping and starting the medication can trigger cravings and weight regain. It is usually safer to keep going and plan ahead with food and alcohol so you can enjoy the occasion without guilt.
How long until I see results?
Patience is key. Meaningful, sustainable weight loss with GLP-1s often takes 12-18 months, sometimes longer. Think of it as a marathon, not a sprint.
What happens after I hit my goal?
Reaching your target weight is a fantastic achievement. Many people stay on a maintenance dose for a while to cement new habits and prevent rapid regain. We will decide together what makes sense for you.
Is skipping meals okay if I am not hungry?
Loss of appetite is common, but regularly skipping meals can leave you low on energy and important nutrients. Aim for small, balanced meals with protein, fibre, and healthy fats to support your body.
Should I stay on a low dose forever?
Some will benefit from a long-term low maintenance dose, but my goal is always to help you build skills and routines so you are not relying only on medication. Medication is a tool, not your whole identity.
What side effects or warning signs should I watch for?
Mild nausea, bloating or constipation are common and usually settle over time. However, if you develop severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, or blood in your stool or vomit, seek urgent medical attention and contact us straight away.
How should I prepare for my first dose?
Instead of a big “last supper,” spend a little time reflecting on what you hope to change in your relationship with food. Plan gentle, lighter meals for the first few days, drink plenty of fluids, and avoid very rich or greasy foods to reduce side effects.
Where should I inject?
Most people find the abdomen easiest, but the thighs or upper arms also work well. Rotate injection sites each time to reduce irritation or tenderness.
What should my diet look like?
You do not need a “perfect” diet. Focus on mostly whole foods, with plenty of vegetables, lean protein, and high-fibre carbohydrates, while cutting back on ultra-processed foods and sugary drinks. Eat slowly, stop when comfortably full, and remember that small, consistent changes matter more than perfection.
